There are many ways to raise our students' list of English vocabulary to support their speaking and (perhaps) writing skills in their school and real life. Some of them are reading any kinds of reading sources (books, papers, magazines, bulletins, and online news); looking out (movies, television programs, dramatic play, music concert, and playing games); and taking heed to any kinds of music.
Nevertheless, these methods do not always help them to see the meaning of unfamiliar words. Apart from estimating the alien language, there are no other solutions except to memorize them first.
On this occasion, I would wish to expose a learning method that I have named it the Gimme 5 method. It concentrates on learning five words daily, whatever variety of root words that students can think.
Why five words, you may ask? It is because five is a significant number to mention as we always say "give me five" when we need somebody else to see eye to eye with us. I guarantee this is the most comfortable and quickest way to speed up student's vocabulary capacity.
As we are holistically aware, tons of scholars and students in Indonesia are experiencing excellent grammar and structure knowledge. Yet, having undesirability even unworthiness speaking skill.
As a result, legions of Indonesian have "gak bunyi" English, aka does not sound well alias silent English learners. It is purely for the reason that they do not receive an equal number of vocabulary lists in their brain database.
Due to this lack of vocabulary, they are reluctant, having no self-confidence, or afraid of speaking to others, especially foreigners. They have no idea what to talk to open a conversation. Furthermore, they do not recognize how to enrich their lexical deposit.
Hence, via this writing, I purport to share my familiarization on how to jack my students' language up orderly.
First, students must be familiar with all parts of speech. Barely knowing parts of a language, it is a mission impossible for them to expand their horizon of English words further. On the contrary, by knowing the lexical group of words, they will pose no trouble in applying the language in terms of spoken and written form.
Second, it is an essential idea that pupils are familiar or acquainted with the utilization of parts of speech. A full insight into the functionality of the language will boost students' knowledge concerning the proper role of the word class. For example, students must be able to grasp that a noun has the function to name people, spaces, things, or minds (John, Median, chair, and became).
In contrast, the verb has to present actions or states of being (smile, thought, turn, and became) and so on.
Third, to construct all words in sentences. This last operation is the ultimate process of how students can grasp a lot of words to brush up their vocabulary competency.
To dig deeper into this idea, let us get a smell at an instance. Imagine that a student already has five words (John, smile, beautify, bright, correctly), and we want him to use two of them [John (noun) and smile (verb)] in a sentence. Having made out the same diagnostic procedure, the written will be as follows: John smiles.
Long beforehand, the teacher needs to explain the grammar aspects (syntax) thoroughly. A teacher has to make sure that the students can fully understand adding or arranging words or phrases to make easily-organized sentences.
Moreover, from those five words per day, students can also ascertain the other forms (derivation) of a particular expression. For example, the expression "beautify" (verb), which derived from the word beauty (noun). In addition to beauty, beautiful (adjective), beautifully (adverb), beautification (noun), beautifier (noun) are likewise part of the word beauty.
Beyond the benefits mentioned above, students could also gain other advantages by multiplying the word with some affixation (prefixes and suffixes) to generate many variations of words, including new words. For example, we can alter the root word "rich" (adjective) into a new concept by adding prefix "en". Therefore, it is now "enrich" (verb) with its derivatives "enrichment" (noun), and so on.
For sure, when our students can consistently bring out five words a day regularly, they will be able to hit 1.825 words annually. It is sufficient for them to write a short report or a short story.
If they multiply the five words into their derivatives and other forms of affixation, let's say three words on the average, they will correctly appear as 5.475 words yearly. That is an even number to publish a novel, even other books.
Calculating from that 5.475-word times 10.000 prospective students, great writers will rise as there will be 54.750.000 writers grow of this country. Shortly, we will be one of the well-known writers-exporting-country in the globe.
So, right away, can you conceive of how many possible words are likely to be brought in from only five root words? Just give me five (gimme 5)!
Greatt Sirr 😇
